This 8-day self-guided walking tour is the only Travel2Move itinerary that combines both the Cinque Terre and the Portofino peninsula, two of the most celebrated stretches of the Italian Riviera — into a single hiking trip. You’ll walk through the protected Portofino Natural Park via the abbey at San Fruttuoso to the glamorous harbor of Portofino itself, then continue south along the coastal railway line into the Cinque Terre, following well-marked trails past Vernazza, Manarola and Monterosso before finishing in the UNESCO village of Portovenere.
Unlike our other Cinque Terre itineraries, this route starts from Camogli rather than Monterosso, giving you a genuinely different first few days on the trail. It suits hikers who want the full Ligurian Riviera experience rather than the Cinque Terre alone.

Day-by-day itinerary
Your tour begins in the pastel-colored fishing village of Camogli, gateway to the Portofino Natural Park.
Hike via the San Rocco viewpoint down to the remote abbey bay of San Fruttuoso, then on to Portofino along a spectacular coastal trail (or by ferry in warm weather).
Transfer by train to Bonassola and walk the car-free former railway path to Framura, continuing through hillside hamlets to Deiva Marina.
A high panoramic ridge trail above the Ligurian Sea, with a break in the beach town of Moneglia before descending to Riva Trigoso.
Walk the flat railway path to Levanto, then climb to the Punta Mesco viewpoint — one of the best views over all five Cinque Terre villages — before descending into Monterosso.
Starting at the historic Soviore monastery, walk via the Madonna di Reggio viewpoint down into Vernazza, then follow the classic coastal path back to Monterosso.
The most spectacular day of the trip: a ridge trail from Riomaggiore via Campiglia, with views over Palmaria, Tino and the open sea, ending at the clifftop village of Portovenere.
After breakfast, travel by boat or bus to La Spezia for onward trains to Pisa, Genoa, Milan or Florence.

Hiking gear and what to bring

Trail Difficulty & Conditions
The hikes range from moderate to challenging, with steep climbs, descents, and numerous stairs. While daily distances are generally manageable, the elevation changes can make some sections physically demanding.
Many trails follow historic mule paths and well-marked coastal footpaths. Some sections feature uneven stone steps and rugged terrain, so good footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are important.
Please note: Trail conditions can change due to weather, maintenance, storm damage, or fire prevention measures. Cinque Terre trails may occasionally be closed. Always check the latest trail status before starting your hike.
Local trains are an essential part of the itinerary, providing convenient connections between several trailheads and villages along the Ligurian coast.
