Day to day programme

Below you will find the complete day-by-day itinerary of this 8-day Vennbahn cycling holiday through the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. Each stage follows quiet cycling paths, former railway lines and peaceful country roads, with constantly changing landscapes, charming villages and impressive natural areas across four different countries.

From the historic streets of Maastricht to the silent plateaus of the High Fens and the panoramic valleys of the Ardennes and Eifel, each day reveals a new side of Europe on two wheels.

Your cycling holiday begins in either historic Maastricht or charming ‘s-Gravenvoeren, depending on your first hotel location. After arrival, you can check in comfortably and take time to explore the surroundings at your own pace.

If you start in Maastricht, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands awaits you with its rich history, lively squares, and unmistakable Burgundian atmosphere. Walk through medieval streets, admire the River Maas, and enjoy a drink on one of the many inviting terraces in the city center. Maastricht offers the perfect combination of culture, architecture, gastronomy, and relaxation before your bike tour begins.

If your journey starts in ’s-Gravenvoeren, you immediately experience the peaceful beauty of the Voer region in Belgium. This picturesque area is known for rolling hills, traditional half-timbered houses, quiet country roads, and small streams winding through the landscape. It is an ideal introduction to the scenery you will discover during the coming days.

This first day is intentionally relaxed, allowing you to arrive comfortably and prepare for the route ahead. You will receive practical travel information, check your bicycle, and if you wish, enjoy a short warm-up ride in the surrounding countryside.

Tomorrow the real adventure starts: your first border crossing by bike and the first kilometers towards the stunning High Fens and Eupen.

Your cycling holiday through Belgium officially begins today as you depart from historic Maastricht or peaceful ‘s-Gravenvoeren and soon cross the border into Belgium. From the very first kilometers, the route offers a beautiful mix of quiet country roads, rolling farmland, orchards, and small river valleys that define this unique border region between the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.

Cycling south, you pass through Hombourg and the extraordinary former microstate of Neutral Moresnet, one of Europe’s most remarkable historical curiosities. For more than a century, this tiny territory existed independently between three nations, creating a fascinating chapter of European border history that still gives this region a distinctive identity today.

The route continues to Raeren, famous for its medieval castle and centuries-old pottery tradition. The impressive castle now houses an important ceramics museum, reflecting the craftsmanship that made Raeren internationally known during the Renaissance period.

As you ride further, the landscape gradually changes character. The roads become quieter, the forests denser, and the elevation gently increases. This transition marks your approach to the eastern uplands of Belgium, where nature becomes increasingly dominant and the atmosphere noticeably calmer.

By the time you reach Eupen, you are already at the gateway to the spectacular High Fens nature reserve, one of the most unique landscapes in Western Europe. Eupen, capital of Belgium’s German-speaking community, offers a distinctive blend of Belgian and German culture, visible in its architecture, local cuisine, and relaxed urban atmosphere.

After checking in, you can explore the historic center, enjoy regional specialties, and prepare for tomorrow’s ride deeper into the High Fens, where wide open moorlands and exceptional cycling scenery await.

Today is one of the most scenic stages of your cycling holiday, entirely dedicated to nature, silence, and wide open landscapes. Leaving Eupen, you cycle directly into the breathtaking High Fens, one of the most remarkable natural areas in Belgium and a highlight for cyclists exploring the Ardennes region.

The route follows quiet roads and largely traffic-free cycling paths, where the only sounds are birdsong, wind across the moorland, and your bicycle moving steadily uphill. The climb towards the high plateau is gradual and comfortable, making this stage accessible while still delivering spectacular scenery. As you gain elevation, the landscape opens dramatically into wide moors, forests, and protected peatland unique to this part of Europe.

Once you reach Kalterherberg, you join the famous Vennbahn, one of Europe’s most celebrated rail-trails and a major attraction for international cycling holidays. Built on a former railway line, the Vennbahn offers exceptionally smooth riding, almost no gradients, and long uninterrupted stretches through forests and valleys.

Along the route you pass the historic railway area of Sourbrodt and the peaceful village of Waimes, both closely connected to the railway history of the region.

A recommended stop today is Montenauer Schinkenräucherei, famous for its traditional smoked Ardennes ham. This regional delicacy has become one of the culinary highlights of the route and offers an authentic local experience during your ride.

From here, you continue south along the Vennbahn through quiet valleys, deep forests, and open green landscapes until you arrive in Sankt Vith, a welcoming small town known for its relaxed atmosphere, cafés, and terraces.

After one of the most beautiful cycling days of the journey, Sankt Vith offers the perfect place to relax and enjoy the unique combination of nature, heritage, and comfort that defines this border-crossing cycling route.

Today’s stage may be shorter, but it is filled with highlights, border crossings, and some of the most memorable scenery of the entire journey. Leaving Sankt Vith, you continue along the famous Vennbahn, where smooth former railway tracks lead you through quiet valleys and open countryside.

One of the first major highlights is Burg-Reuland, where the impressive medieval castle ruins rise high above the village. The combination of ancient stone walls, green valleys, and the peaceful atmosphere makes this one of the most characteristic locations along the Vennbahn route and a favorite stop for cyclists exploring the Belgian Ardennes.

Soon after, you cross another international border and enter Luxembourg. The landscape changes subtly: long rolling ridges, deeper valleys, and a distinctly different rural atmosphere create a new character for today’s ride.

You then arrive in Troisvierges, an important railway town and the official Luxembourg endpoint of the Vennbahn. Here you have a choice: continue by train to Clervaux for a relaxed arrival, or cycle the final section yourself.

The cycling option is more demanding, with several short but steeper climbs, yet it rewards you with panoramic views, quiet roads, and beautiful descents through the Luxembourg countryside. For many cyclists, this extra effort becomes one of the most rewarding parts of the day.

Your destination is Clervaux, one of northern Luxembourg’s most charming small towns. Dominated by its striking white castle, Clervaux offers a historic center, quiet streets, and a refined atmosphere surrounded by wooded hills.

A visit to Clervaux Castle and its famous photography exhibitions adds cultural depth to the day, while cafés and terraces in the center provide the perfect setting to unwind after your ride.

Tonight you stay in or near the center of Clervaux, where the peaceful Luxembourg setting creates a completely different atmosphere from previous stages and prepares you for the next part of your cycling adventure.

Today you leave Luxembourg behind and begin one of the most varied and scenic cycling stages of the entire journey. From Clervaux, the route leads north through peaceful countryside towards the remarkable border area near Ouren, close to the meeting point of Luxembourg, Belgium, and Germany.

This section follows the beautiful Our Valley, widely considered one of the most picturesque landscapes of the route. Narrow river valleys, forested hillsides, quiet roads, and small rural villages create a setting that feels untouched and exceptionally peaceful. For many cyclists, this is one of the most memorable natural stretches of the entire border-crossing bike holiday.

The ride through the Our valley is especially attractive because of its constantly changing scenery: winding roads, open viewpoints, and a calm atmosphere where traffic is almost absent.

After the valley section, the route begins a long and gradual climb back into Belgium. Although this is one of the more demanding days of the tour, the ascent remains comfortable thanks to steady gradients and excellent road conditions. Every kilometer higher rewards you with wider panoramas across forests, meadows, and traditional villages in the Eifel and Ardennes landscape.

As you continue, the scenery becomes more open and expansive, with quiet roads crossing broad green plateaus and gently rolling countryside.

Your destination today is Bütgenbach, a well-known lakeside destination surrounded by forests and open landscapes. The nearby Lake Bütgenbach offers a peaceful finish to this diverse stage and adds a relaxing contrast after a day of climbing and changing scenery.

Bütgenbach is an ideal place to unwind, enjoy the natural surroundings, and prepare for the final stages of your cycling holiday through Belgium, Luxembourg, and the border regions of Western Europe.

Today offers one of the most relaxed cycling stages of the journey, as the route gradually descends from Bütgenbach towards Aachen. Much of the day follows the famous Vennbahn, where former railway tracks provide smooth cycling, minimal gradients, and uninterrupted riding through some of the most attractive landscapes of the Eifel region.

The route takes you through quiet villages, forest sections, and wide open fields that make this international cycling route so popular among long-distance cyclists. The scenery remains varied but comfortable, with a gentle downhill profile that allows you to fully enjoy the surroundings.

One of today’s major highlights is Monschau, one of the most picturesque towns in the German Eifel. Known for its half-timbered houses, narrow cobbled streets, and charming riverside setting, Monschau is considered one of the most beautiful stops along the Vennbahn. A short walk through the historic center is highly recommended, with its traditional buildings, small cafés, and inviting atmosphere.

Further along the route you reach Kornelimünster, a historic monastery village with a remarkably peaceful atmosphere. Its abbey heritage, small squares, and traditional streets make it another ideal stop for a break before the final stretch.

The last 30 kilometers towards Aachen are mostly gently descending, allowing for an easy and comfortable arrival into one of Germany’s most historic cities.

Your destination, Aachen, is internationally known for Aachen Cathedral, the former imperial church of Charlemagne and one of Europe’s most important UNESCO heritage sites. The historic center combines monumental architecture, lively terraces, elegant squares, and a rich cultural atmosphere.

After arriving, you can explore the old town, enjoy local specialties, and experience the unique blend of German history and vibrant city life that makes Aachen such a memorable overnight stop on this cycling holiday.

The final day of your cycling holiday offers a relaxed and enjoyable finish, with gentle riding and beautiful scenery as you leave Aachen and head towards the Dutch border on quiet country roads. The route is easy to follow and perfectly suited for a comfortable final stage after several days of cycling through four different countries.

Near Lemiers, you join the scenic LF13 Maasroute, one of the most attractive cycling routes in South Limburg. Here the landscape opens into rolling panoramic hills, orchards, traditional farmhouses, and peaceful rural roads that characterize this unique border region.

The gently undulating terrain makes today ideal for a relaxed final ride, allowing you to fully enjoy the scenery without major climbs. Depending on your hotel location, your journey ends either in historic Maastricht or in peaceful ‘s-Gravenvoeren.

If you finish in Maastricht, one of the Netherlands’ oldest and most vibrant cities welcomes you with lively squares, medieval streets, and riverside terraces. If your route ends in the Voer Region, you experience a completely different atmosphere, where rolling hills, quiet valleys, and nature create a calm and memorable conclusion.

This final stage brings your four-country cycling adventure to a perfect close, combining comfort, scenery, and the unique cross-border character that defines the entire journey.

After breakfast, your four-country cycling holiday comes to an end. Following a week filled with changing landscapes, international border crossings, peaceful rail trails, and remarkable natural scenery, it is time to depart and travel home at your own pace.

This Vennbahn cycling journey has taken you through four countries, combining quiet nature, historic towns, and some of the most scenic cycling routes in Western Europe. From the wide moorlands of the High Fens to the rolling hills of South Limburg, each day has offered a different atmosphere and character.

You return home with memories of a relaxed and varied cycling experience, where nature, culture, and cross-border discovery come together in one unique holiday.
