Day to day itinerary
Below you will find the day-by-day itinerary of this 7-day cycling holiday along the Frisian Eleven Cities Route. Each stage leads through Friesland’s water-rich landscapes, historic towns, authentic villages, and countless bridges, with new views every day over lakes, canals, and endless green meadows.
Your journey begins in Leeuwarden, the vibrant capital of Friesland — a city rich in history, culture, and character. After arriving at your hotel, you have plenty of time to explore this charming city at your own pace. The historic centre is compact yet full of impressive monuments, atmospheric canals, and hidden streets waiting to be discovered.
Take a walk along the lively Nieuwestad, wander through narrow alleys, and head towards the iconic Oldehove — Leeuwarden’s famous leaning tower that has shaped the city skyline for centuries. Those who climb the tower are rewarded with wide panoramic views over the city and the surrounding Frisian landscape.
The charming Kleine Kerkstraat, once voted the nicest shopping street in the Netherlands, is also a wonderful place to wander around. Here you will find small boutiques, speciality shops, and inviting cafés, while the blend of historic architecture and modern creativity gives Leeuwarden its distinctive atmosphere.
In the evening, a relaxed walk along the canals is highly recommended, as historic warehouses are beautifully reflected in the water. Leeuwarden also offers a rich cultural scene, with several museums, including the Fries Museum, where you can learn more about the history of the Eleven Cities and Frisian culture.
This makes Leeuwarden not only the starting point of the famous Eleven Cities
Your first full cycling day immediately takes you past three of the famous Eleven Cities. As soon as you leave Leeuwarden behind, you enter the open Frisian countryside, where wide meadows, straight canals, and characteristic farmhouses define the landscape. Water is never far away, and the peaceful rhythm of the scenery quickly sets the tone for a relaxed day on the bike.
The first historic town on today’s route is Bolsward, often considered one of the most beautiful towns in Friesland. Its elegant town hall, charming canals, and impressive historic facades give the town an almost stately atmosphere, where the heritage of a former Hanseatic and fortified town is still clearly visible.
You then continue to IJlst, one of the smallest yet most picturesque towns of the Eleven Cities Route. The narrow bleaching fields along the IJlst canal are among the most recognisable sights in Friesland. This quiet little town has a charming atmosphere that makes it an ideal place for a short break.
The day ends in Sneek, a lively city famous for its watersports tradition. The iconic Water Gate welcomes you on arrival and provides one of the most photographed landmarks of Friesland. With its shops, terraces, and cosy streets, Sneek offers the perfect ending to your first cycling stage.
Today you cycle through a completely different side of Friesland: a landscape of lakes, forests, and gently rolling scenery. Shortly after leaving Sneek, you enter a region where water plays the leading role. Large lakes, narrow canals, and old villages with characteristic houses create an attractive and peaceful setting.
As you continue towards Gaasterland, the landscape changes noticeably. This is the only gently rolling area in Friesland, shaped by ancient glacial ridges. Forests, shaded cycling paths, and slight hills make this part of the route especially enjoyable for cyclists. It feels remarkably different from the rest of the province and therefore offers an unexpected contrast.
One of today’s highlights is the Roode Klif, a striking clay cliff overlooking the IJsselmeer. The combination of height, water, and history creates an impressive panorama.
Your destination is Rijs, a small village on the edge of the Rijsterbos forest, or — depending on your chosen route — the maritime town of Stavoren, the oldest city in Friesland. Stavoren is known for its atmospheric harbour and the famous Lady of Stavoren statue. Both destinations offer peace, nature, and a beautiful setting to end the day.
Today is all about Frisian history, colourful towns, and impressive views over the IJsselmeer. From Rijs or Stavoren, you soon cycle towards Hindeloopen, a former fishing town famous for its brightly painted furniture, distinctive dialect, and countless wooden bridges. It is one of the most photogenic places along the Eleven Cities Route.
After Hindeloopen, you continue to Workum, a town known for its lively artistic atmosphere and the well-known Jopie Huisman Museum. The central square, historic facades, and old weighing house give Workum an authentic and charming character.
From here, the route leads further to your destination of the day: Makkum or Bolsward. Makkum lies directly on the IJsselmeer and is known for its promenade, small beach, and long tradition of pottery craftsmanship. It is a popular place for an evening walk and to enjoy the fresh air by the water.
If you choose the route towards Bolsward, you will end the day in another beautiful Frisian town, known for its historic canals, stepped gables, and elegant merchant houses. Both destinations provide a charming and relaxing finish to this varied cycling stage.
Today you experience the clear transition from inland Friesland to the coastal landscape. From Makkum or Bolsward, the route leads through green meadows and open scenery towards the Wadden Sea, where the horizon widens and the fresh sea air becomes noticeable.
Harlingen welcomes you with a lively harbour, historic warehouses, narrow streets, and a rich maritime atmosphere. From the waterfront, you can look out over the Wadden Sea, shaped by the rhythm of the tides, while enjoying one of the most distinctive towns along the route.
After Harlingen, the route continues to Franeker, a historic town where its academic past remains visible throughout the centre. The highlight here is the famous Eise Eisinga Planetarium, the world’s oldest still functioning planetarium, built by a wool comb maker in his own home — a unique place full of precision and history.
Franeker is a pleasant overnight destination, with canals, historic streets, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it an ideal stop during this cycling holiday.
Today’s route takes you through one of Friesland’s most characteristic landscapes, in the far north of the province where ancient dwelling mounds, open fields, and quiet horizons dominate the scenery. Here you experience the peace and space that make Friesland so distinctive.
One of the highlights is Hogebeintum, the highest dwelling mound in the Netherlands. Rising above the surrounding flat land, it reflects the centuries-old struggle against water, while the small church on top forms a striking and historic landmark.
The route to Dokkum remains highly enjoyable, with a varied landscape of villages, meadows, and waterways. Dokkum itself is one of the most attractive fortified towns in Friesland, with star-shaped bastions, windmills, canals, and charming historic streets.
According to local legend, Saint Boniface discovered a healing spring here — a story that still forms part of the town’s identity today. With lively terraces, excellent restaurants, and a beautifully preserved historic centre, Dokkum offers a perfect ending to the day.
Your final cycling stage follows one of the most iconic sections of the Frisian Eleven Cities Route: the Dokkumer Ee. This historic waterway leads through peaceful Frisian countryside, with grazing cattle, straight canals, and wide open meadows.
A highlight of the day is Bartlehiem bridge, world-famous from the legendary Eleven Cities skating tour. This small wooden bridge is one of the most photographed places along the route and a true symbol of Frisian history.
Gradually, Leeuwarden comes back into view, with the iconic Oldehove tower visible long before you reach the city centre. Arriving here brings the journey full circle, with canals, lively terraces, and historic streets welcoming you back.
You end the cycling holiday where it began, carrying memories of Friesland’s waterways, wide landscapes, historic towns, and the unique charm of the Eleven Cities Route — a complete and varied bike tour through one of the most beautiful regions of the Netherlands.
