This historic city is the perfect place to start your adventure. After checking in at your hotel, you will receive your travel documents, route information, and GPS tracks. If you have booked a rental bike, it will be ready for you, allowing you to check and adjust it at your own pace.

Salzburg is famous for its baroque old town, narrow streets, and scenic location along the Salzach River. Take a stroll through the Altstadt, admire Salzburg Cathedral, or ride the funicular to Hohensalzburg Fortress for panoramic views over the city and the Alps. The landscape is open and green, with Alpine meadows, riverbanks, and impressive mountain peaks in the background. Cycling through Hallein and Kuchl, you make your way south at a relaxed pace.

The route is clear and mostly flat to gently rolling, making this stage ideal for recreational cyclists and e-bike riders. Along the way, you pass Werfen, where the imposing Hohenwerfen Castle towers above the valley—a perfect spot for a short break.

Those who wish to shorten the distance can cover part of the route by train. At the end of the day, you will reach Bischofshofen or St. Johann im Pongau, both charming towns in the Salzburgerland region. Overnight stay in a comfortable hotel. This first day of cycling immediately shows why the Alpe Adria Cycle Route is so popular: relaxed riding through stunning Alpine scenery.

This stage combines cycling with a unique Alpine crossing. You start by riding to Schwarzach-St. Veit, then take a train towards Mallnitz. The highlight is the Tauernschleuse, a scenic train connection through the heart of the Alps. This stage marks the transition from Austria to Italy. The surroundings become more Alpine and forested, yet cycling remains comfortable. Overnight stay in Tarvisio, surrounded by nature. A varied day where both culture and landscape visibly change along the route.

Today you cycle through one of the absolute highlights of the Alpe Adria Cycle Route. You follow the old railway line through the narrow Fella Valley, a completely traffic-free section featuring tunnels, viaducts, and panoramic views. The route gently descends, making for a particularly comfortable ride.

Along the way, you pass Pontebba and the medieval town of Venzone, famous for its historic city walls. The high Alpine landscape gradually gives way to the rolling hills of Friuli, making the transition in scenery and atmosphere clearly noticeable.

This stage is considered by many cyclists to be one of the most beautiful cycling days in Europe. Overnight stay in Osoppo or Gemona, on the edge of the scenic Friuli landscape. A day you won’t soon forget.

Today you cycle through the fertile landscapes of Friuli, passing vineyards, fields, and small villages. The route is gently rolling and follows quiet roads and bike paths towards Udine.

Udine is an elegant city with Venetian influences, wide squares, and a lively historic center. Explore the Piazza della Libertà, visit the Duomo, or enjoy an Italian aperitif on a terrace. Overnight stay in a comfortable 4-star hotel.

This day represents the transition from nature to culture, showcasing the versatility of the Alpe Adria Cycle Route.

The final day of cycling takes you to the Adriatic Sea. You ride via Palmanova, an impressive star-shaped fortress town, and Aquileia, a UNESCO World Heritage site with Roman ruins. The route is flat and relaxed.
