Day-to-day itinerary
Below you will find the day-by-day itinerary of this 8-day self-guided hiking holiday in the Dolomites, Val di Fassa. Each stage leads you through alpine meadows, panoramic mountain trails, and charming mountain villages, with constantly changing views of iconic Dolomite peaks, green valleys, and impressive high-mountain landscapes.
Today your 8-day self-guided hiking holiday in the Dolomites begins with arrival in Vigo di Fassa, a charming mountain village in the heart of Val di Fassa. Depending on your travel arrangements, you arrive by train and bus or by optional transfer from Innsbruck, Verona, or Bolzano. After arrival, you check in at your comfortable family-run hotel, where hospitality and alpine traditions are an important part of your stay.
The rest of the day is designed for a relaxed arrival and time to acclimatise. Take a short walk through the village or sit on a terrace and enjoy the views of the surrounding Dolomite peaks. The fresh mountain air and the scenery of green slopes and dramatic limestone mountains immediately give a first impression of what this walking holiday has to offer. In clear weather, parts of the Catinaccio range are already visible, often turning pink at sunset during the natural phenomenon known as enrosadira.
In the evening, you can discover Ladin cuisine and local specialities such as speck, polenta, and mountain cheeses. This first day is intentionally relaxed, allowing you to start the coming hikes well-rested and full of energy — a comfortable beginning to a varied and impressive week in the Dolomites.
After breakfast, you travel by bus to Lake Carezza, one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the Dolomites. Its intense turquoise water, surrounded by spruce forests and framed by the dramatic peaks of Latemar and Catinaccio, creates an impressive start to the day’s hike. From the lake, a relaxed and varied walk leads you towards Moena, often referred to as the “Fairy of the Dolomites”.
You follow well-marked trails through fragrant conifer forests and open alpine meadows. The route is mostly descending and technically easy, giving you plenty of time to fully enjoy the landscape. Along the way, wide views open across the valley, with traditional mountain huts and flower-filled slopes adding to the scenery. Thanks to the gentle pace and the variety between woodland and open terrain, this is an ideal day to settle into the rhythm of walking in the mountains.
The walk includes approximately 230 metres of ascent and around 560 metres of descent, making this stage suitable for walkers with a good basic level of fitness. In Moena, there is time to relax on a terrace or explore the village before returning by public transport to Vigo di Fassa for a comfortable evening.
Today you walk in the heart of the iconic Catinaccio massif, also known as Rosengarten. After breakfast, you take the cable car from Vigo di Fassa, gaining altitude comfortably and making the hike easily accessible. From the starting point, a well-maintained mountain trail gradually climbs towards Gardeccia, a wide alpine basin surrounded by impressive Dolomite peaks.
The route leads through larch forests and open alpine meadows, with continuous views of the famous Vajolet Towers. Thanks to the clear trails and steady pace, there is plenty of time to stop, take photographs, and enjoy the silence of the high mountains. Along the way, several mountain huts invite you to pause for lunch or a coffee with panoramic views.
The walk includes approximately 360 metres of ascent and around 225 metres of descent. Because of the moderate distance and even profile, this stage never feels demanding, yet remains highly impressive. In Gardeccia, you are rewarded with spectacular views across the Dolomites. After the walk, you return by cable car to Vigo di Fassa, where the day ends with a relaxed evening in the village.
Today you can choose between two beautiful valley walks, depending on whether you prefer a lively mountain setting or a quieter route. Val Duron starts in Campitello di Fassa and follows a wide, comfortable trail through an open valley with mountain farms, alpine meadows, and impressive views of the Sassolungo group. This route is especially appreciated for its well-maintained paths and traditional mountain huts along the way.
The alternative option, Val Dona, is quieter and less visited. Starting from Fontanazzo, you walk alongside a mountain stream into a green valley surrounded by steep rock walls and flower-covered slopes. The trail climbs gently and leads deep into unspoilt nature. With some luck, marmots or chamois can be spotted along the rocky slopes.
Depending on the route chosen, the elevation difference is approximately 400 to 700 metres of ascent and descent. Both walks are well marked and can easily be shortened, allowing you to adapt the day to your own pace and fitness level. Afterwards, you return to your hotel in Vigo di Fassa. This walking day is all about tranquillity, nature, and experiencing the Dolomite landscape away from the crowds.
After breakfast, you travel to Pozza di Fassa, where a cable car takes you up to Buffaure. From this elevated panoramic point, you immediately enjoy wide views of the Marmolada glacier, the Sella Group, and Catinaccio. From here, a relaxed and highly scenic walk begins towards Canazei.
You walk across open alpine meadows, through larch forests, and along flower-covered slopes. The route is mostly gently descending and technically easy, making this stage particularly comfortable. Along the way, the views constantly change as the landscape gradually opens while descending towards the valley.
The walk includes approximately 445 metres of ascent and around 355 metres of descent, and thanks to the cable car it remains very manageable. Upon arrival in Canazei, you check in at your hotel and have time to explore this lively mountain village. This day forms a natural transition between two overnight locations, combining high-mountain scenery, comfort, and relaxation.
Today features one of the absolute highlights of the trip: the Via del Pan, one of the most spectacular panoramic walks in the Dolomites. By cable car from Alba, you reach the starting point of this famous balcony trail. The path follows the mountain slopes almost level, offering uninterrupted views of Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Dolomites.
You walk past alpine meadows, mountain huts, and striking rock formations, while far below the Val di Fassa remains constantly visible. The route is technically easy and ideal for walkers who want to enjoy the landscape to the fullest without demanding effort. Elevation differences are limited to approximately 125 metres of ascent and 445 metres of descent.
The walk ends at Lake Fedaia, where you take the bus back to Canazei. This day is entirely focused on panoramic views, tranquillity, and dramatic mountain scenery, and is often considered one of the highlights of the entire journey.
On your final walking day, you can choose between two iconic routes. The Sassopiatto hike follows the slopes of the Sassolungo massif across alpine meadows and panoramic trails, with several mountain huts along the way. This route includes approximately 400 metres of ascent and descent and can be adjusted comfortably to your own pace.
The alternative option is Sass Pordoi. By cable car, you ascend to nearly 3,000 metres altitude, to what is often called the “Terrace of the Dolomites”. Here you walk across a lunar-like rocky plateau with breathtaking views of Marmolada, Civetta, and Pale di San Martino. Thanks to the cable car, elevation differences remain limited to approximately 240 metres of ascent and descent.
Both options provide a spectacular conclusion to your walking week. Back in Canazei, you enjoy a final evening in the Dolomites, with views of the mountains you have come to know closely over the past days.
After breakfast, your 8-day self-guided hiking holiday in the Dolomites – Val di Fassa comes to an end. You check out of your hotel in Canazei and prepare for your onward journey. Depending on your chosen travel option, you continue by bus and train towards Bolzano, Trento or Innsbruck, or use a pre-booked transfer. As the accommodation is centrally located in the village, departure is easy and relaxed.
If you have a later departure, the morning offers time for a short walk through Canazei or a final coffee on a terrace overlooking the surrounding mountains. The village provides a lively yet atmospheric farewell to Val di Fassa and one last chance to absorb the mountain atmosphere.
Looking back, you have spent a week walking through one of Europe’s most spectacular mountain regions: across alpine meadows, quiet valleys, panoramic high-altitude trails, and iconic massifs such as Catinaccio, Sassolungo, and Marmolada. Thanks to well-marked trails, cable cars, and comfortable accommodation, you have experienced the Dolomites in an accessible and relaxed way — returning home with memories of an active, varied, and impressive walking journey.
